Proteins Objectives

Genes & Proteins

Explain what a gene is and how it relates to DNA structure; outline the processes of transcription, and translation, including the roles of mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA; and provide examples of the functions proteins play in animals, including how structure relates to these functions.

Comparative Genomes

Describe what a mutation is, how it occurs, and the possible impacts; provide examples of mutations in animals species; and compare and contrast the genomes of a variety of animal species, including how all organisms utilize the same genetic code.

Body Coverings

Describe the various body coverings found in animal species and relate to shared proteins; and identify feather structures and describe the role of feathered wings in insulation and flight.

Laboratory Animals

Explain what is means to map a gene, including the basic process and historical use of fruit flies and crossover data; list the characteristics of animal species that make them likely to be used as laboratory animals, including care and ethical concerns; and describe what research using laboratory organisms has revealed about “non-Mendelian” forms of inheritance.

Quiz Directions

Complete all four sections and take the quiz on Canvas.

Use the learning objectives above to guide your studying.

Proteins Media

Introduced in Genes & Proteins section of this guide:

Protein Synthesis Drawing

In this media piece you are making an original labeled drawing of protein synthesis.  Sketch/draw the synthesis of a hypothetical protein fragment within a cell.  Include the following labeled elements:
  • cell
  • nucleus
  • cytoplasm
  • amino acids
  • the DNA sequence of GAT-AGT-GCA
  • the corresponding mRNA sequence
  • the specific amino acid sequence produced (mini polypeptide)
  • ribosome (rRNA)
  • tRNA
  • nucleotides in a codon
  • transcription
  • translation

Media Directions

To be completed after taking the quiz on Canvas.

Once you have completed your protein synthesis drawing, upload it to Canvas.  Your drawing can be submitted as a PDF, a word document, a photo of the notes, or even a video.  Multiple assignment formats are supported.

Animal Portfolio

Portfolio Directions

Continue adding your quiz answers and media pieces to the final animal biology portfolio.  Match your work with one of the nine course learning outcomes.  You can review the portfolio requirements here.
