Predation Objectives

Locating & Critiquing

Outline a strategy for locating science information from a variety of resources; distinguish between skepticism and denial; and explain why critiquing information is an important aspect of science and list ways to constructively critique.

Predators & Prey

Summarize predator and prey relationships by analyzing data sets, and explain how oversimplification can mistakenly exclude important variables; describe relationships between banana slugs, garter snakes, and rough-skinned newts; and create a model that shows the impacts of predator and prey populations on each other.

Tactics & Weapons

Describe tactics predators use to capture prey and provide examples of animal species that utilize these tactics; identify the physical structures animals use to capture and immobilize prey and provide examples of animals that utilize these structures; and describe the genetics, evolution, predatory and prey response behaviors of wild and domesticated cats.

Body Forms

Describe the basic body forms found in animals, including example species; discuss how these body forms can relate to animal survival; and analyze skull structures to determine likely functional role of animals in their habitats.

Use the learning objectives above to guide your studying.

Predation Media

Introduced in Predators & Prey section of this guide:

Predator-Prey Simulation

For this media piece, you are developing your own simulation of a predator-prey relationship.  It can be similar to the two that Mark modeled in the videos or completely different.
Your simulation needs to:
  • Have a predator population with variation.
  • Have a prey population with variation.
  • Show how the predators and prey can impact each other.
The variation can be size, color, shape, speed; whatever you choose.

What you are submitting:
  • A description of your simulation, this can be a photo, video, or written description.  Include what you are using to represent the predators, the prey, and the variation in both populations’ traits.
  • A brief self-critique of what you like about your simulation, and what you would potentially improve upon to make it an even better representation of predator-prey interactions.

Media Directions

To be completed after taking the quiz on Canvas.

Once you have completed your predator-prey simulation, upload it to Canvas.  Your simulation can be submitted as a PDF, a word document, a photo of the notes, or even a video.  Multiple assignment formats are supported.

Animal Portfolio

Portfolio Directions

Consider adding your predator-prey simulation to your final portfolio.  Match your simulation to one of the nine course outcomes.  At this point, you may already have begun to populate four or more outcomes.
