About this Guide
Finding Home
A long time ago I remember someone saying that you have decisions to make in life, like selecting the right job, finding the right partner, and living in the right location. I fell in love with Oregon the moment I reached the Cascades. Although I grew up on the south side of Chicago with no mountains or ocean coast in sight, I can’t imagine being far from either at this point. It took a bit of traveling to find, but now this is home.

Behind-the-Scenes
Facilities
Many national and state parks are maintaining websites with up-to-date facility information. This has been especially useful in the context of traveling in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Finding current information on drinking water, restrooms, and which sites are open makes trips much more enjoyable.
There are so many Smokey statues, posters, and signs around the U.S., you could plan a “Smokey selfies” tour.
Crunching Leaves
On the Road Again
Old-growth forests are distinct, they have a completely different sound and feel than young forests. Their age can put things in perspective.
