Module/Week 6
Chromosomes & DNA
Laboratory & Media Piece
Chromosomes & DNA Objective
Develop a media piece that links chromosomes and DNA to amphibian life stages.
This lab and media piece builds on what you learn in this week’s Life Cycles lecture and guide.
Assignment (due Sunday on Canvas)
Background information for this lab & media piece is in the Life Cycles guide:
Chromosomes & DNA
For this media piece you are linking biological concepts together. Most people have heard of DNA and are familiar with animals having different life stages, but may not be able to explain how they relate to one another.
You are developing a media piece that describes how the chromosomes visible under a microscope relate to DNA; the structure of DNA that codes for life; and the role of the chromosome processes mitosis and meiosis in amphibian life stages.
Organize your thoughts and media by the following four sections so you could clearly access the information in the future. Include in your Chromosomes & DNA media piece:
-
Images (photos, sketches, and/or video) and text (can include captions) that describe how chromosomes and DNA relate to each other.
-
Images and text that describe the structure of DNA and explains how the order of the bases (A, T, C, G) code for life.
- Images and text that compare and contrast the processes of mitosis and meiosis and show how these processes relate to amphibian life stages.
- Your choice of one of these additions: (A) comparison of DNA models including a substantiated opinion on which you think is best; (B) indicating when mitosis and meiosis occur in an organism other than amphibians; or (C) an explanation of which outcome you are putting this piece under in your final portfolio.
Extra time in lab? You may want to do all three of the options, or another you think up, to have additional material for your final portfolio.
