About this Guide
Collecting Life
One of the repeated messages in this guide is that it takes great care to manage living things. It is hard enough to maintain a single organism, an entire habitat is a lifetime endeavor. But another message is the amazing amount you can learn while trying to keep organisms alive and flourishing. It is a privilege and joy to be a small part of a quail surviving until the next year or a tree growing another foot in height. Much of life may be out of our control, but it is worth collecting the small moments we can.

Behind-the-Scenes
I’m unpacking an unidentified cave-dwelling Cubaris sp. “Panda King” from Vietnam. Note how “bold” they are despite a small size.
There is a lot more plastic beach debris than I remember on the Oregon Coast. Mark and I now collect some on every trip.

Another Box
Make your own hummingbird food, it is cheaper than prepared food and lacks unnecessary dyes.
Hummingbirds eat insects too. This is a way to “manage” the fruit flies that keep appearing on rotting fruit.
Two more serval videos, you can observe similar behaviors to domesticated cats.
The “petting” portion of this zoo is irresistable.
