Oregon Symbiosis Objective

Sketch, label, and explain a rose gall symbiotic relationship.

Recitation (the 50-minute activity) attendance is not required, but you are welcome to use that class time as office hours to ask your GTA questions, or study with classmates in 127 Weniger.
Determining the interactions within the rose galls you will be observing for this media piece will be easier if you have already completed these pages of this week’s Communities Guide:

Media Piece Assignment

Oregon Symbiosis

Rose galls are found in many parts of Oregon and are an example of symbiosis.  We are providing videos of rose galls found throughout oak savanna in the Willamette Valley (see below).  You will be providing a rich description of the gall, including a sketch, labels, and explanatory text.  You can also include photo screen shots from the videos, if desired.

Select a view from the video and sketch the gall.  This sketch can be on paper or made digitally with a stylus and screen.  Label the part of the gall that is the rose scar, and where the insect larvae are located.  Also include a brief explanation of this type of interaction, including how the participating organisms are impacted (benefit, harmed, or no impact).

5p2 Oregon Symbiosis

You are turning in a media piece that includes:

  • a labeled sketch of a rose gall that includes the part that is the rose and where the larva are located.

  • a description of the gall interaction, including what type of interaction is occurring and the impact on both participating species.
