Discovery Objectives

Science Discovery

Provide examples of science discovery, including exploration, description, and explanation; list characteristics of barnacles, including structures and classification; and describe what a naturalist is and provide examples of historical naturalists.

Course Topics

Describe the characteristics of life and list the hierarchy of life from atoms to the Earth’s biosphere; define this course’s topics of biodiversity, ecology, and conservation biology; and provide characteristics of bees, including their relationship to the course topics.


Science Knowledge

Describe how science knowledge is comprised of concepts, skills, and connections with other disciplines, provide examples of science knowledge related to biodiversity, ecology, and conservation biology; and explain how the course concepts relate to real life, including the final portfolio assignment.

Perspectives

Define what perspective is and provide examples of factors that impact perspective; provide multiple reasons for why different perspectives are important in the scientific enterprise; and summarize the course goal of building personal perspectives and knowledge about the course topics through the process of science discovery.

Course Notes

In this section and the next three sections (webpages) of this Discovery Guide, you will be taking notes on the concepts that are covered.  At the end of the guide, you will upload these notes to Canvas as this guide’s media piece.  You can take notes digitally on a device or on a piece of paper that you digitally photograph and upload: your choice. 

You are able (and recommended) to use your notes during each Guide’s quiz.  This will be the only time you turn in your notes for grading, but most people continue to take detailed notes, since they can be used to jog memory during each quiz and can be added as personal work to the final Field Guide.

Media Directions

To be completed after taking the quiz on Canvas. 
 
Once you have completed your notes over all four sections in this guide, upload them to Canvas.  Your notes can be submitted as a PDF, a word document, a photo of the notes, or even a video.  Multiple assignment formats are supported.

Portfolio

Portfolio Directions

Typically each week you will have about an hour’s worth of work on your Portfolio that is due the Wednesday of Final Exam week (week 11).

This week, since you did the “start BI 101 here” Canvas pages that took about an hour, there is no Portfolio assignment.  You can look at those Canvas pages about the course again, if you like:
