About this Guide
Ocean Dreams
When you ask students majoring in biology what they would like to study if anything was possible, more people select marine organism than any other topic. We can’t resist the call of the sea; even land-locked cultures imagine the oceans as places of discovery and promise. In this guide we are exploring marine habitats and organisms, with many of the videos taken close to home in Newport, Oregon.

Behind-the-Scenes
If you live along a coast, you may already be familiar with beachcombing. If not, you are in for a treat!
Your beach-combing and study tools do not need to be expensive. Most of our equipment is dual use and came from a resale shop.
The beach is the perfect place to journal. This is a low-impact alternative to collecting objects and typically takes less space :).
We were able to shoot a few videos right before the pandemic and hope to be back to our favorite learning locations sometime soon.
Art remains critical in thinking about and understanding nature as well as exploring our relationship with the natural world.
Staging Videos
Some of our videos happen “on the fly” when we see something interesting; others take planning so we have what we need with us on the road.
Having Fun
Our sunglasses are being scratched by flying sand, but getting photos and videos has given us a new appreciation for Oregon and teaching on location.
South Coast
We are big fans of the south Oregon coast. The beaches are often deserted, the dunes are impressive, and the temperate coastal rainforests are lush.
Beachcombing Option
Many people do not want to accumulate objects to carry around for years. Photos and sketches can capture a moment or thoughts with minimal environmental impact.
